Superb early 19thc. Staffordshire Pearlware Drinking Group showing a Man and Woman drinking, it looks as though they are fighting. They both have glasses in their hands with bottles at their feet and a small dog sits to the left of them.
These groups were made to show how terrible drinking was. In the late 18thc/early 19thc. . there was an epidemic of distructive drunken behaviour caused mainly by Gin. Because at the time water was contaminated it was thought that drinking beer was a better option. This was not the case, and drunken behaviour carried on. In 1828 the Temperance Movement was established to promote the total abstinence of any forms of alcohol. This group was probably made to show what alcohol does.
