Superb 19thc. Staffordshire Circus group of two bare back riders. The figures are possibly Andrew Ducrow and Louisa Woolford on a horse facing right, they are both standing side by side on an ornate saddle-cloth. To the right Ducrow wears a plumed hat, shirt, jacket, pantaloons and knee boots. His second wife Louisa wears a plumed hat, bodice, knee length skirt and bootees. Ducrow was the son of a Flemish Strong man. He became the chief attraction in Astley's circus in 1824. He introduced his great feat, then unparalleled, of riding six horses at the same time. In 1832 he performed in front of William IV in a temporary amphitheatre erected in the grounds of the Pavilion in Brighton. Pugh: Page E423, Figure 194 Marked as rare.
