19thc. Staffordshire figure titled BAND OF HOPE - Temperance Group 

Band of Hope was founded in Leeds in 1847 by an Irishwoman Mrs Ann Jane Carlile to save children before they were tempted to drink alcohol. In 1851 local bands were amalgamated in a Band of Hope Union.  The society is still in existance and the hymn they sang at their first festival is still sang today.
